Promote High-Standard TPP Agreement
US Chamber’s Donohue to Promote High-Standard TPP Agreement, US Business Interests in Asia
Medan, US Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue will travel to Tokyo, Japan, and Jakarta, Indonesia, next week to meet with business and government leaders before traveling on to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Bali.
In each city, Donohue will advocate for the inclusion of high-level, comprehensive, and 21st-century standards in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as negotiators reach the anticipated completion of talks by the end of 2013.
“America’s future prosperity is clearly linked to how well we do in Asia, and TPP is the best opportunity the U.S. has to engage with Asia’s trading system,” said Donohue. “As discussions enter their end game, we strongly urge the negotiators to hold fast to the goal of making the agreement a ‘model of ambition’ to address traditional trade issues, as well as the challenges of 21st-century commerce, without short circuiting our ambitious objectives for the sake of expediency.”
“The Chamber has led the U.S. business community’s efforts in support of a high-standard TPP agreement throughout negotiations, and we will continue to do so until we reach this finish line,” Donohue continued. “Tough decisions and compromises will have to be made, but we must ensure that the business community’s voice is heard and the final agreement benefits all participants.”
While in Jakarta, Donohue will also release a new report, in conjunction with the American Chamber of Commerce Indonesia (AmCham Indonesia), on bilateral trade with Indonesia, highlighting the ways in which U.S. investment has strengthened the Indonesian economy and promoted job growth.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
